John is survived by his sons Geoffrey of Brewster, MA, Matthew of Ashburn, VA and Daniel of Charleston, SC his 8 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren, as well as his former wife, Diane Haag to whom he was extremely close.
John was a "Jack of all trades" and he mastered many of them. During his life, John's genius included being a Doctor of Medicine, a builder, a carpenter, a golfer, a world traveler and a talented musician.
He loved to play guitar and piano. His musical tastes ranged from The Eagles to Pachelbel's Canon and from The Beatles to Madam Butterfly.
He was a loyal friend, loving father and a caring doctor. Whatever he did in life he did to its fullest extent and with a zeal and exuberance that could not be matched.
John was born to Elizabeth and Louis A MacKenzie on January 3, 1949 in Flushing New York. An adventure seeker from day one, he was nearly born in the taxi cab on the way to the hospital.
He attended Fairfield College Preparatory School in Fairfield Connecticut and after a brief stint at Detroit College, graduated from Notre Dame University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1970. With his degree in his back pocket, John embarked on an exciting 10 year career as a tree climber.
Enamored with the home birth of his second son, Matthew, and with a strong desire to make a meaningful contribution to humanity, John decided to become a medical doctor. Not to be deterred by time or money, he continued to work as a tree man to support his family while he commuted to UMass Boston from Middleborough to complete Pre-Med. With the same drive and determination, he was accepted to the prestigious Tufts University in Boston where he earned his Doctor of Medicine at age 35.
He completed his medical residency in Madison, WI and then worked in Family Practice for an additional 4 years in Wisconsin before moving back to Cape Cod in 1991. Moving to Wellfleet fittingly on the heels of Hurricane Bob, he worked for 20 years at the Cape Cod Hospital as an Emergency Room Doctor.
There will be a memorial gathering of friends and family Saturday the 28th from 11:00-3:00 at Doane, Beal, and Ames 160 W Main Street Hyannis.
