It is with profound sadness, that the Butler Family announces the peaceful passing of our dear sister, Kathleen F. Butler, age 66, on February 7, at her home. Kathy, a longtime resident of Centerville, grew up in Osterville, attended Barnstable High School and was well known in her community. She worked at Centerville Bakery, then Stop & Shop for 20 years.
Kathy was predeceased by her parents, Walter H. and Mary (Orlando) Butler; her infant sister, Catherine Butler; Brother-in-law, Robert Mitchell, and her niece, Haley Mitchell. Kathy is survived by her siblings: Mary Butler-Minor, her favorite sister, (Stuart), of South Dennis; Tracey Mitchell, her dedicated care provider, of Centerville; Walter Butler (Victoria) of Buzzards Bay; John Butler (Jean) of Dennis, Susan Nolan (Scott) of Scottsdale AZ, 9 nieces and nephews, 11 great nieces and nephews, as well as extended family members, who cherished her deeply.
Kathy was truly a joy to our family. She was known for her kind heart, her constant smile, and her love of life. Kathy adored music, concerts, and dancing, as well as, cooking, pottery, coloring, reading, and word search books. She especially loved attending her day and recreation programs, where she had many lifelong friends. Italian food was one of her life’s greatest pleasures.
An accomplished Special Olympics athlete, Kathy proudly earned many medals in bowling, swimming, and field and track. She also loved to travel and experienced many wonderful adventures, including trips to Italy, New York, Canada, Arizona, Myrtle Beach, Florida, and California, where she appeared on The Price Is Right- a memory that always brought smiles to those who knew her. Many, many years ago at a National Down Syndrome Convention, Kathy met her idol, Michael Landon. from her favorite tv show ‘Little House On The Prairie’, and it was one of her greatest thrills.
Kathy was born at Cape Cod Hospital. At the time of her birth, and diagnosis of Down Syndrome, Kathy’s parents were told she should be institutionalized, as she would be a ‘burden’ to her family. Instead they brought her home and raised her with the same love, care, and expectations as their other five children. Kathy’s life inspired her parents, along with other families, to help form the local ARC of Cape Cod, advocating for dignity, inclusion, and opportunity for individuals with disabilities. Her sisters, Mary and Tracey, both worked within this field, as well. Kathy brought many gifts to her family and others. She had a wonderful life. Never underestimate someone’s abilities, just because they are different.
Services will be private.
In remembrance of Kathy, please be kind, love candidly, and spread a little more love in the world—just as she did every day.
