Lois Hallet Betterley, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on January 7th at her childhood home in Cummaquid, after her courageous fourteen month battle with brain cancer. As always, she was surrounded by her loved ones. Lois was the last surviving member of the 11th generation of the descents of Andrew Hallet, who started the East Barnstable Plantation in 1639. Lois was the youngest daughter of Oliver William Hallet and Marian Louise (Dumont) Hallet. She was pre-deceased by her parents; her brothers, Oliver William Hallet II and Richard Peter Hallet; her sisters, Maryann Hallet, Frances Hallet Hazelton, and Martha Hallet Adams; her son, Mark Hatfield; her daughters, Janice Carol Hatfield, Carolee Creswell and Joyce Hatfield; and her grandson, Yohhann Hatfield. Lois grew up in Cummaquid and was a member of the class of 1953 at Barnstable High School. She earned her GED while raising her young children, as well as studying accounting at Cape Cod Community College. She worked as the office manager at the Hyannis office of Electrolux for more than 30 years. Prior to her retirement, Lois worked at the Barnstable Registry of Deeds, as a title examiner for Terry, Dunning, & Terry, now Dunning, Kirrane, McNichols and Garner, L.L.P. Lois was the president of the Hyannis Emblem Club in 1973 and 1993, holding many posts there from 1965. She led community charity work, including blood drives for the American Red Cross. As Lois had a rare blood type, she donated over a gallon of blood over the years, being honored for her contribution. In addition, Lois led benefits for the American Cancer Society. She is survived by her children, Jennie Hatfield-Lyon of Toronto, Maryann H. Landry of Orange, MA, David Hatfield of Hyannis, and Charlene Betterley Smith of Cummaquid; her 25 grandchildren; and her 7 great-grandchildren. Lois will be remembered for her kindness, strength, wisdom, humor, and loving heart. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 14th, at 11 am at Doane, Beal and Ames Funeral Home; 160 West Main Street Hyannis, MA followed by burial at the Cummaquid Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a tribute donation may be made to the American Brain Tumor Association. For directions and online condolences please visit, DoaneBealAmes.com
