Marty was born in Newton, MA, and lived his early years in Canton, NY. He attended St Lawrence University, where he earned a degree in Psychology. He taught at Barnstable Junior High School before beginning a long career as a family therapist and mental health and substance abuse counselor. Marty was also instrumental in the creation of the Critical Incident Stress Program within the Emergency Medical System on Cape Cod.
Marty loved sailing and being on the ocean, especially in Barnstable Harbor, where he served as a sailing instructor at the Barnstable Yacht Club. During retirement, he became Commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla in FL.
He loved the outdoors and gardening, the company of good friends, and the many pets who were his companions through the years. Marty was a natural storyteller and gifted writer who shared countless stories from his life with his family. He was a self-taught piano player, and music was a big part of his life. A keen observer and thoughtful listener, he had a way of bringing humor to almost any situation with a clever turn of phrase, a pun, or a well-timed joke.
It is hard to sum up a life lived over 92 full years, but it can be said that Marty was well-liked by all who knew him, deeply loved by those closest to him, and will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Marty’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Alzheimer's Association, or a local rescue dog organization.
