February 14, 2014, at the age of 96. Born and educated in
London, England, she became a nanny for the Eastwood family,
remaining lifelong friends with their children, David and
Diana. Throughout her youth, Mona was a dedicated Girl Guide
(the precursor to the Girl Scouts of the USA). The
resourcefulness and teamwork the Girl Guides taught her led
Mona to enlist in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, the
women's branch of the British army, at the start of World
War II. She was selected as a driver for the Welsh officer
training school staff and the military ambulance corps.
While stationed in the city of Hereford, Mona met American
GI George A. Nigro of Revere, Mass., at an allied service
dance. They married in Revere in 1947, where they resided
for 25 years before relocating to Hyannis, Mass., in 1971.
Mona had worked at Boston's
legendary Filene's Dept. Store, transferring to their new
Cape Cod Mall branch upon settling in Hyannis. She became a
top salesperson for ladies' fashion accessories, especially
Dooney & Bourke luxury handbags, retiring after 34 years
at age 83. Travel was an important part of Mona's life as
she and her family visited relatives in Britain and New
Zealand as well as many locations in the US and Canada.
She enjoyed sports, too, cheering for World Cup soccer, the New
England Patriots and her favorite team, the Boston Red Sox.
Mona was predeceased by her husband
George, her brother Ernest C. Smith of Britain and her
sister Peggy Hearn of New Zealand. She leaves her daughters
Deborah M. and Pamela A. Nigro, both of Hyannis, plus loving
nieces and nephews in Britain, New Zealand and Australia.
The Nigro family wish to thank Cape
Cod Hospital, The Pavilion Rehabilitation and Nursing Center
and the Visiting Nurse Assoc. of Cape Cod for the quality
care Mona received.
Donations may be made to the
charity of one's choice. Messages of condolence can be sent
