November 28,1937 - January 9,2018
Robert Spohn died at Cape Cod Hospital on Tuesday morning, January 9, 2018, with his longtime companion Kathy Jansen by his side. He had been a resident of Yarmouthport for the last eighteen years, having retired from Falls Village, Connecticut.
Bob was Professor Emeritus and former chairman of the Business Department at Northwestern
Connecticut Community College where he taught for over thirty years. He had a larger than life
personality, and was considered one of the most popular professors at the College. He kept in touch
with many of his former students, and many visited him at his Cape Cod home after his retirement.
Prior to his teaching career he was a junior executive with Exxon, and then AT&T.
Bob grew up in Wycoff, New Jersey and graduated from Ramsey High School. He received a baseball
scholarship to Colgate University where he majored in economics and also owned a small vending cart
where he sold hamburgers at sporting events to help pay college expenses. He later earned an MBA
from University of Connecticut.
He was co-author with Robert Y Allen of two college marketing textbooks which were adopted in over 100 colleges and universities in the U.S. International editions were adopted in universities in several foreign countries. In 2017 he completed and published an autobiography titled “Seven Webfoot Way”. He also was author of numerous articles on business and art.
Bob had many diverse interests including golf, baseball, and antique collecting. But his passion in
more recent years was collecting art. He assembled an outstanding collection of early twentieth century
Cape Cod artists. He donated much of this collection to the Cape Cod Museum of Art where a
special Robert Spohn exhibition and reception was held shortly before his death. He also served as a docent at the Cape Museum and at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut.
He is survived by his son Michael Spohn (Sandy) of Norwalk, Connecticut, his daughter Kate Spohn of
Yonkers, New York, his grandson Aiden Spohn, and his loving companion Kathy Jansen.
Those who wish may make a donation to the Cape Cod Museum of Art, P.O. Box 2034, Dennis, MA
