Thomas E. Wieher, 77, a veteran of the Vietnam War and longtime resident of both Blairstown, NJ and West Yarmouth, MA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, in his ‘happy place’ of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Born in Cambridge, MA, July 13, 1948 to the late Emil N. Wieher and Esther M. (Brown) Wieher, Tom was a proud Eagle Scout and Freemason. He graduated from Belmont High School in Belmont, MA in 1966. At that time, Tom made a brave and selfless choice and enlisted in the United States Air Force driven by a deep sense of duty and belief in service to his country. He served from 1966 to 1970 including active duty in Vietnam. Tom kept his wartime experiences close and private however his family believes deeply that the man he became was shaped from those experiences; determined, courageous, and incredibly tenacious.
After returning home, Tom married the love of his life who he met at Belmont High, Mary Jane (MJ) O’Rourke, on April 3, 1971. Together, they built a beautiful life with their two daughters, Kimberley A. Hartman and Jennifer L. Garrison, filled with love, laughter, and friendship. They shared a love story of more than five decades that has been admired by all who were fortunate enough to witness it.
Tom’s professional journey began with New England Telephone in Boston, later taking him to AT&T in Dublin, OH, and eventually to Lucent Technologies in Morristown, NJ. His work in telecommunications took him throughout Asia until he retired at the age of 50. Despite a career spent connecting others through communications and technology, his grandchildren often teased him that he never quite figured out how to use an iPhone.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife Mary Jane, daughter Kimberley and her husband Robert Hartman of East Stroudsburg, PA and daughter Jennifer and her husband Shawn Garrison of Media, PA. He was the adored grandfather of Bailey Rose Garrison and Patrick Thomas Garrison and step-grandfather of Christopher J. Hartman. Tom was predeceased by his sister Sandy (Wieher) Mertz and step-grandson Jeremy E. Hartman.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate Tom’s life and service will be held at 12:15 p.m., Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at Doane Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 160 W. Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601. Friends and family may call from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service. Interment with military honors will be for family and friends at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
