Born January 19, 1945 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, she was the middle child of Clyde and Gayle Harris Day. Growing up with older brother John, and younger brother, Michael, Janet excelled in all types of sports and physical activities to keep up with her brothers. The family moved to various parts of the United States with her father’s Naval career, and finally settled in Idaho Falls in the late 1950s.
Janet attended O.E. Bell Jr. High and graduated from Idaho Falls High School 1963. She married her junior high sweetheart, Dan James Tobin, in 1962. Together they raised their son Ted James, and daughter Angela Louise. The family enjoyed a love for summer and winter outdoor activities – golfing, skiing, and boating, and especially spending time at their cabin at Henry’s Lake.
She began her working career at Tobin Dry Cleaners, later moving to the Bank of Idaho, where she worked for 25 years. She then enrolled at Idaho State University and graduated cum laude with an elementary education degree in 1992. Janet loved her students and was a highly requested substitute by other teachers. She finished her career working for East Idaho Credit Union.
Janet was a fierce competitor, whether swimming, golfing, or participating in 10K runs. She was a ballet student of Sallye Gossman and performed the lead role of Clara in the Nutcracker at the Civic Auditorium while in her 30s.
Janet had a life-long passion for horseback riding. She purchased a beautiful Arabian and began years of horsemanship classes and dressage. Janet was a quick study and became a beautiful rider. She joined a group of lady trail riders and has spent the past few years discovering the backwoods near Sun Valley, Idaho; Jackson, Wyoming, and most recently riding among the buffalo of Lamar Valley in Yellowstone. Janet will be missed terribly by all those who knew and loved her for her sweet nature, funny laugh, and wonderful sense of adventure.
Janet is survived by her husband of fifty years, Dan; son Ted (Jody) of Bozeman, MT; daughter Angela of Idaho Falls; her mother, Gayle Day of Idaho Falls, brother John Day of Moss Landing, CA; Michael Day of Ashland, PA; grandchildren Chelsey, Chase, Ali, and Lydia. Her first great-grandchild is due next month. She was preceded in death by her father Clyde Day.
A celebration of Janet’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 13, 2012, at Buck-Miller-Hahn Funeral Home, 825 E. 17th Street in Idaho Falls. A gathering of friends and family will be held one hour prior to the service.
