Today, we gather with a sorrowful heart, broken to remember and honor the life of our beloved Daughter and sister, Achol John Akech Gak. The pain of her loss is deep and unforgettable, yet we are thankful for the blessing of her life and the love she shared with us so freely.
Achol John Akech Gak was born on February 17, 1996, in Kansas City, Missouri. On February 15, 2026, in Kirksville, Missouri, she passed away from an asthma attack, just two days before her 30th birthday. Her passing was sudden and heartbreaking. In her ultimate moments, she was surrounded by her family and extended family members, comforted by their presence and love.
She was the treasured daughter of John Akech Gak and her mother, Ajah Mayen Atem. The name Achol was given to honor her family legacy, upholding the memory and dignity of those who came before her in the South Sudanese Dinka tradition on the father's side. She carried her name with pride and grace. She was raised alongside her siblings — Deng Sr John Akech Gak, Aluk John Akeck Gak, and Mayen Bak, Aleea Bak, and Stepbrother Deng JR John Akech Gak — and her stepmother, Aja Bol Deng, and her niece, Amelia Adau Akech Gak. And her grandmother, Arok Dual Kuir –Aunt Akoi Mayen Atem, her love for her family was constant and unwavering.
Achol began her education at Englewood Elementary and Middle School in Omaha, Nebraska, and later attended Winnetonka High School. And later she pursued higher education, studying social studies with the hope of becoming a counselor to serve and guide her community. Her aspirations reflected her compassionate nature and her desire to make a positive difference. She later settled in Kirksville, Missouri, where she continued her life with quiet strength and perseverance. Achol John Akech Gak possessed a gentle spirit, a humble nature, keen intelligence, a talent for solving problems, and heartfelt sincerity. She listened with care and spoke with thoughtfulness. She placed a high importance on education, demonstrated a strong appreciation for literature, and took great interest in traveling and exploring new destinations. Most of all, she had a giving heart and consistently sought to support and uplift others. As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate the life she lived and the love she shared. Her years were few, but her impact was lasting. She will be remembered for her kindness, her devotion to family, and her steadiness.
Achol John Gak was a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many. We will always cherish the memories of her vibrant laughter and the way she could light up a room. Her warmth, kindness, and infectious spirit will be deeply missed. In this tough time, we are reminded of the strength and love that Achol brought into our lives. She left an indelible mark on everyone she met, and her legacy will continue to live on through the many lives she touched.
As we reflect on the life of this gentle soul, we are engulfed by sadness at losing such a remarkable spirit, taken from us too soon. In these trying times, we take comfort in Isaiah 57:1-2, which reminds us that good people sometimes leave this world early. While it feels deeply unfair, we hold onto the hope that there is a divine purpose behind everything. We believe those who live well find peace after death. Achol John Gak, your spirit will forever reside in our hearts. We will treasure the precious memories she has gifted us, celebrating her enduring legacy as a devoted daughter, sister, and friend. Rest in peace, my friend Achol John Gak. You will always be missed and remembered with love. Your presence in the lives of those who knew her. May her soul rest in eternal peace, and may her memory continue to be a blessing to all of us?
