DeLoris Amelia (Addison) Smock, 93, of Independence, MO passed away on Sunday, September 19, 2021, after a long battle with dementia. A visitation is scheduled for 11:30 am on Friday, September 24th at Newcomer’s Noland Road Chapel, 509 S. Noland Road, Independence, MO 64050. The visitation will be followed by a service at 12:00 pm and a burial at Woodlawn Cemetery.
DeLoris was born in Kansas City, KS to Henry C. and Almeda Darling (Mennis) Addison on April 1, 1928. She was the youngest of six siblings. DeLoris met Joseph M. Smock at the Loews Midland Theatre where they both worked, and they got married on July 29, 1950. She often told stories of the fun she had spending time in downtown KCMO with Joe and their gang of friends. DeLoris dedicated her life to raising her five children, and she actively participated in her local TOPS Club and American Legion Auxiliary. She loved cheering for the Chiefs and Royals; her favorite players were Frank White and Joe Montana. She was a fantastic cook, and her potato salad and turkey stuffing were legendary. She did not learn to drive until the age of 59 following Joe’s death, but once she found the road, she was a woman on the go. She built quick relationships in many stores on the east side of KC which enabled her to consistently secure the “impossible to find” Christmas gifts like Cabbage Patch Dolls and Tickle Me Elmo. DeLoris epitomized the word “spunky” and was adored by all who met her. Those who loved her gave her many nick names including Tootsie, Big Dee, Ma Dee, and Dee Dee.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joe Smock, son Greg Smock, sister Louise Howie, sister Lois Hoffman, brother Henry “Junior” Addison, and sister Mildred Manning. She is survived by her sister Mary Winchell; her children Deb Parks (Larry), Jeff Smock (Diane), Susie Dolan (Tim) and Bruce Smock (Vicki); five grandchildren, one great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
