Dorothy M. Gaines

Dorothy is survived by her son, Timothy Gaines, daughters, Nelda (Bob) Cort, Melody Rust, Jan (Jim) Scates and Glena (Joe) Wheelbarger; siblings, Bob Edwards and Ruby Ford, along with 16 Grandchildren 20 Great grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Gaines, her eldest son, Norman Eugene Gaines, two sisters, Margie Briscoe and Ruth Applegate and brother, Fred Edwards Jr. Grandson, Marshall Joseph Wheelbarger, Granddaughter, Jackie Rust and Great Grand daughter, Emma Rust

Dorothy was born on October 15, 1925 in Otterville, Missouri to Fred and Ella Edwards. She finished high school at the Bryant school in Rich Hill Missouri in 1943. She first worked as ranch hand for the Miller Rodeo Company who owned a 3000 acre ranch, jobs there included keeping count of the Brahma Bulls and breaking horses. She then worked at clothing manufacture in Rich Hill, MO., until she saved enough to go to school in Omaha where she learned meteorology. She also worked at the Bendix Corporation in Kansas City, MO., during the second world war years. Dorothy also ran a day care at her home for many years as well as being the day care director for the Sterling Acres Baptist Church in Kansas City, MO. Dorothy currently has been worshipping at Epic Church in Independence, MO.

Dorothy married Norman Gaines on November 20,1947 in Prathersville, MO. They made their home in Excelsior Springs, MO., for a short time, later moving to Kansas City, MO., and finally moving to Independence, MO., where they bought a new home and raised their family. When Dorothy retired she moved to the Willow Estates independent living community where she lived her final 17 years, she enjoyed many good friends and activities and had a fulfilling retirement.
