

Gertrude Elizabeth Powell (née Zaugg), affectionately known as Gert, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2024, in Independence, Missouri, at the age of 100. Born on November 12, 1923, in Jamestown, Missouri, she was a lifelong resident of the state.
Gert dedicated 39 years of her career to Montgomery Wards as a bookkeeper, a role she performed with diligence and pride. Beyond her professional life, Gert was a deeply caring and nurturing individual, always prioritizing the needs of others above her own. Her warmth and generosity of spirit made her a cherished figure among those who knew her.
Her personal life was marked by a profound love for her family and her dogs, whom she loved immensely. Gert was also an avid gardener, finding joy in planting flowers and assisting others whenever she could. Her commitment to her community extended to her active participation at Moniteau Advent Evangelical and Reformed Church.
Gert was preceded in death by her husband, James Powell; her parents, John and Alma Zaugg; and her brother, Wilbur Zaugg. She leaves behind a loving family including her nieces Debi Ingram, Juanita Becht, Dedra Ingram, great-niece Caitlin Ingram, nephews Kenneth Zaugg, Danny Zaugg, Jarrod Ingram, great-nephews Caleb Ingram, Britt Antkowicz, and Erik Antkowicz, who will all miss her dearly.
Services to honor Gert's life will be held at Newcomers Noland Road Chapel, located at 509 S Noland Road, Independence, MO 64050. The Newcomers Noland Road Chapel is also assisting the family during this time. Gert's life was a beacon of kindness and dedication, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
