James Donald Barnes passed away peacefully on February 16, 2025, at the age of 87. He was born on December 20, 1937, to Tilda Almeda and Richard Barnes, who, along with his eight siblings, preceded him in death.
James was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Judy Barnes, and a loving father to Laura Beard and Vikkie Tucker (David). He was a proud grandfather to Angela Clasen (Robert), William Hampshire (Erin Wesselmann), Sabrina Hampshire (Caleb Jennings), and Kaylee Jewell (Travis). He also cherished his role as a great-grandfather to Nikhil Clasen, Kinsley Hampshire, Wrynley Jennings, Piper Jewell and Jaxon Jewell.
James dedicated his career to sheet metal construction and was a proud member of Sheet Metal Local #2. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he found joy in being an active member of Christ United Methodist Church Independence, where he sang in the choir and performed many solos over the years.
A man of many talents, James had a deep love for music—he played the fiddle beautifully and possessed an extraordinary singing voice. He brought laughter to children with his playful “Donald Duck” voice and was affectionately known as "Smiley" by both residents and staff at the Carmel Hills.
James also had a generous heart, dedicating countless hours volunteering at Truman Medical Center East. His warmth, humor, and kindness touched many lives, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
