Clifford was born on December 18, 1943 to Florence and John Ebenal, in Regina Saskatchewan. He was the first born of three children (Cliff, Allan and Vivian). His family originated in South Russia, and he was raised on the family farm at St. Peter’s Colony in Saskatchewan. When Cliff’s father passed away, the family moved to Regina. Cliff attended high school at Campion College and obtained his Telecommunications Certificate at Ryerson College in Toronto. Cliff married Elsie on August 8, 1964, and they lived in Regina for a short period before moving to McLean in 1973 where they spent their time together on their acreage.
Cliff was employed with the RCMP for 15 years and then opened his own business. He sold and serviced two-way radios and mobile phones, operating the business for more than 20 years. He then worked at SGI as a part time security guard. Later in life Dad retired and became a caregiver to Mom for several years as she had some health challenges including Alzheimer’s disease which became a full-time job to make sure she was well taken care of.
Dad was an active member of the McLean community and was also the mayor for a number of years. He worked at cabarets, pancake breakfasts, snowmobile derbies, beef suppers and the water treatment plant. He also supported the women’s ball team including filling in as a base umpire for games when nobody else qualified to do the job was available! He also liked to hang out with the guys at Grad’s shop.
Dad and Mom had a cabin at Wapaweeka Lake where they enjoyed the beauty and peacefulness that it offered and they spent several winter holidays in Mexico, to get away from the cold prairie weather. They also enjoyed local visits to Winnipeg to see family, and to St. Peter’s colony to celebrate Grottofest annually. Dad was known to be a bit eccentric – he had several variations of domestic and farm animals coming and going on the acreage including pigs, cows, horses, rabbits, ferrets, chickens, goats, hamsters, gerbils, turtle, dogs, cats, birds, goldfish and even a Canada goose. His special dog Sadie was known as Mom and Dad’s travel companion whom they took with them to grocery stores, restaurants, Mexico annually as well as the hospital. Her special service dog vest was well known from McLean all the way to Lo De Marcos, Mexico! Dad was also known to tinker with anything and everything electronic, and had a special interest in restoring Mercedes Benz vehicles.
Cliff was predeceased by his mother, father, sister Vivian and wife Elsie, and several other close relatives.
Dad is survived by his brother Allan (JoAnne); his three children Laura (Chris) and their family (Jeff, Elly); Todd (Jenzen) and their family (Taylor, Katie, Tim, Ruby, Noah, Kashton, Everleigh, Elianna) and Cathy (Cory) and their family (Bradley, Meagen, Jaxon). Also left to mourn are several nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
Dad will be missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends; may he rest in peace with his maker and with all those who passed before him including his beloved wife, Elsie.
Cremation has taken place, with a private family interment and community celebration planned in the future. In lieu of flowers, for those inclined, donations may be made in Dad’s memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, 1738 Quebec Ave. Unit 26, Saskatoon, SK. S7K 1V9.
