Nécrologie de Alberta S. Sweeney-McLaurine
Alberta Sweeney McLaurine’s life began on May 19, 1930, in the town of Kingstree, South Carolina, and was sunset on September 22, 2020. At the age of 90, she went home to be with the Lord. She was born to Silas and LouDella (Pendergrass) Singletary. She was very fond of her parents and spent many hours telling the family about both of them; going to church with her Dad, and her mother making dresses for her were two of her greatest stories. She had an adventurous childhood, started working in the fields at 8 years old, and travelled the seasons with her family. One of her greatest wishes was to be an actor. Judging by the number of plays she participated in at school and at church, she got her wish. Alberta, or as her first family called her, “Berta,” was a country girl at heart and loved to play pranks on everyone. She was a family woman, a wonderful cook, and would give away her last dime. She, as a member of New Day Pentecostal Apostolic Church until her illness, was funny and caring, and had a strong love for God and her church. And, she was a little stubborn at times. She worked for much of her life after becoming an adult. She worked at The Lampshade Factory in New York City. Then she worked for Hooks Drug Store and Block’s Department Store in Indianapolis, finishing with Value Village as a floor Supervisor. May she ride on the wings of love. We will miss her terribly. Alberta is survived by her children Lyla R. Sweeney, Esther A, Thornton (Alvin Lee, Jr.), and James G. Thornton. She leaves behind Five grandchildren – Curtis Sweeney, Allison T. Lee, Tiffany Sweeney, James, and Earlene; and two great grand children – CJ, Makayla, Sameria, and Elijah. A host of other family and friends are left behind and are very dear to our hearts. She was predeceased by her entire family of sisters and brothers – Pearl, Jacob, Deola, Nathaniel, Dorothy, McKeever, and Mildred. Both services will be held by the Crown Hill Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. Viewing will be on Monday, September 28, 2020, at 12:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held at the gravesite on Monday, September 28, 2020, at 1:00 P.M., officiated by Bishop Artie Montgomery, Jr. The family would like to acknowledge the support, love, and well wishes of our large family and the many friends across America who could not be with us due to the global pandemic. Whether at home care or at Eskenazi Hospital the care taken by all the doctors, first responders, and nurses and the myriad of other personnel was much appreciated. Bless you all.
