

Alexis “Sandy” Coats was born to Tody Hutchinson and Geraldine Madison in Princeton, Indiana on October 15, 1949. She accepted Christ at an early age and later joined Universal Baptist Church in Indianapolis, In. She received her education and graduated from Shortridge High School in 1965. Later, she received her Licensed Practical Nursing degree from Indiana Vocational Technical College in 1989.
Alexis Coats worked at Bridgeport Brass for approximately 10 years and later worked for Wishard Hospital for 30+ years. Coats Landscaping was the family-owned and operated business that Alexis managed and maintained throughout her marriage.
Alexis Coats was married to William L. Coats for 53 years. They were blessed to have 5 children, Tami Coats, William L. Coats, Jr (Kyesha), Stephen D. Coats, Marcus D Coats (Noelle), Dina M. Miller (Robert, deceased), and Pam Ford, stepdaughter.
Alexis Coats was preceded in death by her husband; William L. Coats, parents; Tody Hutchinson and Geraldine Madison, brother; Eric Clay, child; Stephen D. Coats. She is survived by siblings, Eva Cobb, Alexander Hutchinson (Buddy), Lydia Ellis, Tyrone Clay and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, friends and in-laws.
Alexis Coats was an activist, pillar, and mother of the Brightwood Community. She was a woman of action and took pride in maintaining the community by being hands-on. Even while her health was declining, she continued to reach out and help those in need.
Mrs. Coats will always be known for her giving, loving, nurturing and caring spirit. She conquered many roles in her lifetime: wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Alexis “Sandy” Coats will truly be missed by all.
A visitation for Alexis will be held Friday, August 25, 2023, at 10:00 AM at New Haven Missionary Baptist Church, 3418 Schofield Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46218, followed by a celebration of life at 12:00 PM.
