On the morning of January 28th Alice Ross Miller Luce joined her beloved brothers, Mother and Father in the next life. Alice had been suffering from the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease for the past several years, so this transition was welcomed by her and offered her rest and wholeness.
Alice had a long and happy life. She lived her childhood on a farm in Fern Creek Kentucky. She was anxious to move on to the city though and earned her bachelor’s degree in 1952 from Union College in Barbourville Kentucky. It allowed her to get a teaching job that brought her to Indiana where she earned her Master’s degree in Education in 1957.
Moving to Indianapolis also brought her to Broadway United Methodist Church where she met many new friends, but primarily the love of her life, Bob Luce. They met in 1958 and married in August of 1959. They spent the rest of their lives together. Their love became more and more evident as they grew old together, generally holding hands when they were walking together.
Alice left teaching to raise her family. In the early 70s though she and Bob partnered with two other couples to establish Wooden Key Cards and Gifts. Eventually they had four stores, which took up a great deal of her time.
Once Alice’s sons were grown and gone, the stores were sold so that Alice and Bob could travel and enjoy their cottage at Lake Wawasee.
She was skilled at needle point and spent a great deal of her down time with a project going in her lap.
Nothing brought Alice more joy though than her grandchildren. She loved watching them grow and change. Her favorite thing was to have her family at the lake.
Alice and Bob had two sons, David (Debbie) and Jim (Fred). They have four grandchildren Erin Scott (Brandon), Emily, Matthew (Lianne), and Michael (Katie), two great grandchildren through Erin and Brandon (Jillian and Connor) and one through Michael and Katie (Charlie).
There will be a private Celebration of Life at Crown Hill for immediate family.
In lieu of flowers, Alice welcomed gifts to St Luke’s United Methodist Church.
