Al spent the majority of his working years in the auto body business. He was known for being an excellent painter. He won awards for his work on auto body painting. Al loved to make a big country breakfast, however breakfast wasn't typically served until lunchtime. He was a very fond animal lover and in spite of his lifelong disdain of cats, he developed a strong bond with a singular cat named Smoke. Al was very devoted to his family, but just as devoted to his fur family. This may include squirrels, depending on if he had peanut butter sandwiches available that day. Al was an avid hummer, whistler and singer. He loved all sports, but was an avid Kentucky Wildcats fan. He loved outdoors and spent a lot of time in his life going camping and fishing. When his kids were little, they would spend a lot of time at the park. Al was a professional prankster. Anyone around him could be his next victim. Al will be remembered for his humor, kindness and his love of family.
Al is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Terry Russell; children, Al (David Shelton) Russell Jr., Gary Russell, Matt (Ashley) Russell, Phillip Russell and favorite lap dog, Bella; siblings, Phyllis (Jimmie) Thompson, Janette Emberton and Tim Russell; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Al was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Ova Russell; sister, Joyce Gettings; and daughter, Julie Russell.
A visitation for Al will take place on Monday, August 14, 2023 from 12:00 pm until 3:00 pm at Feeney Hornak Shadeland Mortuary, 1307 N. Shadeland Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46219. A funeral service will immediately follow at 3:00 pm.
