Anthony Leo Henn was born All Saints Day, November 1, 1932, to Carl and Valeda Henn in Evansville. He liked to say, “I was the seventh son and the eighth of 12,” and proceed to list them in order. The family moved to Indianapolis in the early ’40s, where he met a neighborhood girl, Mary Catherine Kadel. He graduated Cathedral High School in 1950 and entered the Air Force in 1951. Before deploying to Japan as a clerk typist, Tony started a friendly letter exchange with Mary that developed into a loving and devoted correspondence. Joining the camp church choir, he met Norman Bickart, who would become his best friend. In playful competition, the two wrote Mary; Norm got her ring size; Tony got the ring. He proposed when on leave November 1954. Discharged in August 1955, he and Mary wed later that month. He worked in insurance for 45 years, retiring from American States in 2000.
Tony was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. Family meant everything to him. He drove his children to events they wanted to attend or participate in, and as a grandpa attended as many of their activities as he could, for as long as he could. He sang in a number of choirs over the years and volunteered at St Vincent de Paul and Meals on Wheels. He and Mary loved Las Vegas and traveling with family. He will be remembered as the consummate entertainer: singing, dancing, and telling jokes and stories.
Tony was predeceased by his wife Mary; sister Marge Earl, brothers Carl, Joe, John, Dick, Jim, Paul, and Pat; and great-granddaughter Maryann. He will be missed by his children Juli(Rich) Van Wyk, Dave(Bev), Dan(Jane) and Andy(Steve); grandchildren Phillip(Amanda), Eric(Julee), Katherine(Stephen) Planas, Kelsey Van Wyk, Kimberly(Dan) Dewar, Brian(Annie), and Emily(Tyrone); 3 great grandchildren, Charles, Olivia, and Hazel; brothers Gene(Helene), Vince(Connie), Bob(Karen); sister-in-law Polly; 34 nieces and nephews. We are grateful to the staff at Restoracy of Whitestown who loved Tony’s personality and sense of humor.
