Born in Worcester, Massachusetts on April 14, 1945, Bruce moved with his family to Indianapolis, Indiana, as a young child—a city he would proudly call home for the rest of his life.
A graduate of North Central High School, he then attended Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Michigan. It was during this time that he met his future wife, Margaret M. Long, while both were working at King’s Food Host in Indianapolis. They married eight years later and went on to share 56 years of devoted partnership.
Bruce later founded his own antiques and collectibles business, which he ran until his retirement in 1991 and then on eBay from 2007 till his death. Retirement brought new purpose in 2001 when he began volunteering at the Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral Soup Kitchen in downtown Indianapolis—a role he cherished and fulfilled faithfully until his health no longer allowed him to serve in 2016.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harold T. Schaller; his mother, Gloria Schaller; and his sister, Beth Chamberlain. He is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret M. Schaller; sons Frank “Byron” (Brie), Samuel (Nora), and Harold “Tom” (Kate) and daughter Rebecca (Matt) Ratti; grandchildren—Jack & Gretchen Schaller, and Otto Ratti—were the joy of his later years and “Black Cat”, his favorite cat…
Memorial Visitation for Bruce will be from 4-8pm on Wednesday, April 30th at St. Pius X Catholic Church. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Thursday, May 1st at 11:00am with visitation there beginning at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Bruce’s memory to the Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral Soup Kitchen or to FACE Low Cost Animal Clinic.
