

Pastor Charles J. Walter Sr. was born on December 21, 1944 to James and Sarah Walter in Greenwood, Mississippi. Rev. Charles J. Walter Sr. professed Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mary Grove Baptist Church in Drew, Mississippi.
Charles graduated from Amanda Elzy High School in 1964. After attending Rust College in 1965 for a time, he then, with the help of Rev. Mozel Sanders and Dr. Andrew J. Brown, received a full musical scholarship to Bishop College in Dallas, Texas. During his time at Bishop College, he was blessed to sing and travel, one of his tours featuring a performance with Laura Green.
He transitioned to Indianapolis, IN in 1970 to continue his education and received his Master’s Degree from IUPUI and also attended Central Baptist Theological Seminary.
On June 17, 1972, Rev. Charles J. Walter, Sr. united in holy matrimony to Mary Frances Hill. Two sons, Charles J. Walter IV and Scott Duval Walter, were born of this union.
Pastor Walter taught for the Indianapolis Public System and retired after 37 years of dedicated service. His tenure included Math Department Head under the leadership of Dr. Jacqueline Greenwood; was featured in the Indianapolis Star in the piece entitled �"Catchy Little Numbers,†showcasing his ability to tutor students in math citywide.
Rev. Charles J. Walter Sr. became a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in 1972 and was licensed to preach in 1984. He was ordained under the leadership of Pastor Therron Williams and answered his call to pastor St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in 1990. He remained there in leadership for 24 years and while there established the SPMBC Mass Choir, produced a Christmas musical entitled �"The Birth,†wrote many songs including �"The St. Paul Song†for the children, �"The Family Song,†for the church and wrote many poems for various special events for the church.
Pastor Walter was a loving and caring man who loved God and possessed the gift of mercy. He gave freely of this time and talents to his family, friends and even strangers alike with no expectations of anything in return. His giving and forgiving nature brought joy and peace to all of us.
Pastor Charles J. Walter, Sr. departed this earthly plane and ascended to heavenly reward on Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at the age of 70 years.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife, First Lady Mary Frances Walter; sons, Charles J. Walter, IV (Chris) and Scott D. Walter; granddaughters, Arianna and Nyra Walter; sisters, Thelma Collins of Indianapolis, IN, Youvonia Johnson of Chicago, IL; brothers, George Walter of Chicago, IL and Mitchell Williamson of Lawton, OK; sister-in-law, Margaret Jean Walter of St. Louis, MO; mother-in-law, Viola Hill of Beckley, West Virginia; and a host of nieces, nephews, other extended relatives, church family and friends.
