It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we announce the peaceful passing of Clare Margaret Ferguson Hollett on April 1, 2026, at the age of 89. Born on November 21, 1936, in Newport News, Virginia, Clare—affectionately known as Peggy—lived a life rich with creativity, love, and a profound appreciation for the natural world.
Peggy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Tom Hollett, and her cherished sons, Mark and James VanWagenen. Despite these profound losses, she continued to inspire those around her with her unwavering strength and resilience. Her spirit lives on through her surviving daughter, Karen Jones, her brothers David and Billy Ferguson, her sister Mary Ferguson, her four grandchildren, and her eight great-grandchildren. Each family member carries forward her legacy of love, creativity, and passion for life.
A naturalist and contemporary artist, Peggy found beauty and inspiration in the flora and fauna that surrounded her. Her artwork was not merely a hobby, but a testament to her deep connection with nature. Her vibrant and expressive pieces captured the essence of the natural world, offering glimpses of its wonder and intricacy to all who encountered them. Her artistic approach to life was a beacon of inspiration to many, encouraging others to find and nurture their own creative spirits.
Peggy's love for animals and plants was not confined to her art; it was woven into the very fabric of her daily life. She nurtured gardens that flourished under her careful attention and had an innate ability to connect with animals, often speaking of them with the fondness reserved for dear friends.
Those who knew Peggy will remember her not only for her artistic talent but also for her warmth, kindness, and gentle spirit. Her home was always open, a place where friends and family gathered to share stories, laughter, and the occasional impromptu art lesson. Her ability to listen deeply and offer wise, often humorous counsel, endeared her to many.
In honoring her wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held, allowing her family to bid farewell in a setting of peace and intimacy. For those who wish to celebrate Peggy’s life, the family suggests taking a moment to appreciate the beauty of the natural world—a tribute she would have cherished.
Though she has left this world, Peggy’s legacy endures in the hearts and lives of those she touched. Her artistic vision and love for nature will continue to inspire future generations, reminding us all of the beauty that surrounds us and the power of creativity to transcend time.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for donations to be made in Peggy's memory to local wildlife conservation efforts or art programs for youth, causes she held dear throughout her life.
May her gentle soul rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the beauty she so loved.
