Early Life and Employment
Doris Jean Hill was born on August 10, 1926 in Indianapolis, IN to the union of Lorin A. Brown Sr.
and Thelma Thompkins Brown. She was the big sister to four siblings, who preceded her in death:
Lorin Jr., Sylvester, Arnold, and Carol. The family later moved to Chicago, IL. It is here where Doris
received her formal educaô€†Ÿon. Aô€...?'er returning to Indianapolis, Doris was employed at RCA and
later Western Electric. She became a teacher’s aide at IPS #42, while fulï?'žlling her greatest job as
wife, mother, and homemaker.
Spiritual Life and Ministry
In the early 1960’s, Doris received the good news of Jesus Christ and her spiritual journey began.
She was bap􀆟zed at the Mar􀆟ndale Church of Christ. She was a faithful and devoted member of
Light of the World Chris􀆟an Church (formally Second Chris􀆟an Church) un􀆟l God called her home
on April 21, 2017. While a member of Second Chris􀆟an Church, Doris became a Sunday school
teacher where her love for the word of God was exempliï?'žed through her teachings. At Light of the
World Doris iniô€†Ÿated a “Free to be Thin” class where scripture was used to encourage weight loss.
She parô€†Ÿcipated in Darcas Circle, a Chrisô€†Ÿan Women’s Fellowship Bible Study Group, understanding
that knowledge of the scriptures would enhance their lives. When faced with her own health
challenges, she began holding classes in her home. For over thirty years, early in the morning, she
approached the throne mighô€†Ÿly with prayer concerns of others. This Godâ€fearing woman of faith
has been a spiritual mother and prayer warrior to many.
Family Life and Heritage
On February 16, 1957, Doris married William A. Hill and together they had four loving daughters.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill”, and daughters, Lowanda and Carolyn.
Doris was “the rock” to all her family, who depended on her for guidance and strength. She shared
family history with anyone who would listen. She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters;
Terri Conn (Foster), Karen Hill, grandchildren; Sam (Thelma), Joseph, Nikki, Kesha, Andrea, Amber,
and Ausô€†Ÿn, two greatâ€grandchildren; Sam( Yeshica) and Sharde, ï?'žve greatâ€great grandchildren,
sistersâ€in –law; Claire Reid (Leon), Beverly Beauford, Daisy Johnson, Sheila Dumas, brothersâ€in law;
Donald Murphy and Charles Murphy, loving nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends
including her spiritual sisters; Nancy Barker, Lois Johnson, Ann S􀆟ngley, Bobbie Oldham, Jeanne
O’Neal, Iola Sanders and Vera Samuels.
