Doris J Moore was born October 16, 1947 in Starkville, Mississippi to the late Nancy Kate Pearson & JD Austin. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Greater Ebenezer Baptist Church in Starkville. After graduating from Henderson High School, she attended Tuskegee University & Mississippi Valley State University where she studied nursing. Doris settled in Indianapolis, Indiana with her family where she worked for Wishard Hospital for a short time and then joined Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, where she retired after over 35 years of service.
Doris loved her family immensely. Her children and grandchildren, were her pride and joy. She always enjoyed cooking their favorite meals on birthdays, special occasions or simply because they asked. She absolutely adored her grandkids and enjoyed taking them to the movies & toy store, or just having them running around, playing at the house. She also deeply cherished the relationship with her brother, sister-in-law (the late Willie & Sallie Pearson), nieces and nephews in Chicago. Everyone who knew Doris, knew Chicago was one of her favorite places to go. Her other favorite place to go was home to Starkville which she regularly visited prior to moving her mother to Indianapolis. She also traveled to visit with other relatives and friends.
Doris was an active and faithful member of Promise Land Christian Community Church for over 40 years. She served as a Sunday school teacher, youth counselor, youth choir director, trustee board member, and choir member for many years. She also volunteered in the food pantry & served over the kitchen planning many church dinners & fellowships. Doris formed many relationships and precious friendships over the years, including a close circle of "sisters & brothers" in Christ she considered more like family. Mom was affectionately known as "Mother" and "Granny or Granny Doris" by many in her church family. She loved people, loved to laugh & talk and never met a stranger. No matter where she went, she would often strike up a full conversation with a complete stranger.
Doris transitioned from this life on November 27, 2018 at Clearvista Lake Health Campus. She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving children, Sammie (Shelli), Rashonda, Erika (Mario) of Indianapolis, IN and Ves Harris, Houston, TX; grandchildren Dante, Denver CO, Whitley, Samantha, Shelby and Emri, great grandchildren Samuel and Axel; god-daughter Lisa Scruggs & her children affectionately known as "Bebe's Kids" and a host of nieces , nephews, cousins and friends. Doris was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Doris didn't want a sad homegoing service or anyone crying over her casket. She considered this a time to rejoice because she knew without a doubt she would be with the Lord. Her greatest desire was for her entire family to be saved so that we would all see each other again in Heaven. So in the words of Mom, "if you don't know Him, get to know Him...before it too late".
