March 14, 1945 – May 1, 2026
Eugenia Lynn Schutt, lovingly known as Jeanie, was born on March 14, 1945, in Santa Ana, CA to Edgar and Frances Unthank. She was the eldest of four siblings (Steve, Kitty, and George), and grew up as what she fondly described as an “Army Brat,” traveling the world with her family throughout childhood. Among her favorite places were Augusta, GA and Okinawa, but she always considered herself a California girl at heart.
During high school in Okinawa, Jeanie made the decision to give her life to Jesus Christ, who became her Rock and Redeemer. Anchored by her faith and saved by grace, she lived the remainder of her life with a deep and abiding love of God, regularly reminding people He was called “Emmanuel, God with us.”
Jeanie attended Point Loma Nazarene University (then Pasadena College), where she studied nursing and met Don Schutt. Together they built a family and were blessed with three sons. Of all the titles she held in life, “Mom” was the one she cherished most. Her transition from nursing into motherhood was natural for someone so gifted in sacrificial love, warmth, and devotion.
As her boys grew older, Jeanie reentered the workforce, serving as a psychiatric nurse in Central Indiana for more than a decade. She compassionately cared for members of the mental health community, bringing dignity, patience, and grace to those often overlooked.
Jeanie found joy in life’s simple things: getting her hands dirty while gardening, putting her diabetes to the test with minor addictions to ice cream and See’s chocolate, and singing wonderfully obscure songs that few others seemed to know.
She was preceded in death by her brother Steve and eldest son, Ken Schutt.
She is survived by her brother George (Lori) Unthank, sister Kitty Unthank; sons: Kevin Schutt (Shana) and Brian Schutt (Tiffany); her beloved grandchildren, Josie, Oakley, Parker, Emmy, and Sophie, who were among her greatest joys; and a loving extended family and many dear friends.
Jeanie’s legacy is one of steadfast faith, sacrificial love, a unique sense of humor, and deep devotion to her family. She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
Visitation will be held at Feeney-Hornak Keystone Mortuary, 2126 East 71st Street, Indianapolis, IN 46220, US, on May 9, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:30 am, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:30 am.
Burial for Jeanie will take place in Tennessee at a later date this summer.
