Gathris was born in Nashville TN on Wednesday, March 14, 1928, the only child of Laura Belle Fields-Hayes and John Hayes.
She passed away in Indianapolis, IN on Sunday, May 31, 2020 in her home, surrounded by family.
Gathris was the wife of the late John Erby, Sr, with whom she birthed John L. Erby Jr, Billie Ann Erby, and Jo Lynn Erby-Wilson.
She later joined Willie (Billie) Edward Sharp, Sr with whom she birthed Willie Sharp and Timothy Sharp.
She also leaves behind grandchildren: Shanelle Erby-Melton, Darrin Walton (Ashleigh), Amber Wilson, Dior Sharp, John Jordan Erby, Joel Erby, Tara Sharp, and Madison Sharp.
Our loved one also leaves behind 7 great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She leaves a legacy and is fondly missed.
Gathris confessed Christ at a pivotal time in her life and she served her church community diligently and served on the nursing board. She attended Greater Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church where she grew under the leadership of Pastor Sterling Williams.
Gathris loved The Lord and she especially enjoyed spending time reading the Bible.
Gathris loved her family. Our Dear One is fondly remembered preparing soulful Sunday meals for her family and always opening her home as a haven to anyone in need. She led by example. There was never a job too big or small for her to tackle, and was always quick to offer advice, always ending it with “Just trust in Jesus”.
Gathris spent much of her career working for the Indiana School for the Deaf and was remembered as a “social butterfly” who loved spending time with her cousins Elsie and Ruth, and various friends.
Preceding Gathris in death are her children, Billie Ann Erby and John Erby.
She is sadly missed, but we all take strength in that she is with her father, Jesus Christ.
“One more day
One more time
One more sunset, maybe we’d be satisfied
But then again
I know what it would do
Leave us wishing still, for one more day with you.”
