

Herschel was born in Hopkinsville, KY to Gladys Juanita Street and James Arthur Buckner, Sr. on February 16,1949 and is the second of ten children. Herschel’s siblings are James A. Buckner, Jr (Patricia) Brenda J. Terry, Vivian Williams, Carrie Maxie (Wallace), Willene Bensoltane, and Calvin Buckner. Herschel graduated from Attucks High School in 1967. In June of 1967 after graduating from high school, Herschel joined the United States Air Force as a policeman. He served his country until November of 1968 when he was honorably discharged. After leaving the Air Force, Herschel studied to be an electrician. In 1969, Herschel moved to Indianapolis, IN and worked as an electrician at Graybar Electric for many years.
Herschel met the love of his life, Dora Buckner, in 1972 and they wed on February 10, 1978. Together, they raised Helen Hunter, James E. Hunter, Jr, Darold Hunter, Nyra Buckner, Danielle Buckner, Kelly Buckner and Kendrick Buckner. Herschel and Dora enjoyed 45 years together.
Herschel professed Christ at an early age. Herschel enjoyed music, dancing, fishing, sports and enjoying time with his family. Herschel enjoyed attending church, spreading knowledge and teaching others things he learned through the years. Herschel fostered and raised many kids as though they were his own. He loved to go on long rides in the passenger seat, enjoyed a good restaurant, especially MCL, which was his favorite. Herschel always had a smile and brought joy to all those encountered.
Herschel was preceded in death by his wife, Dora Buckner, son, Darold Hunter, daughter, Helen Hunter, parents Gladys and James A. Buckner, Sr., brother, Lawson Buckner, twin siblings, grandsons Curtis D. Daniels, James E. Hunter III and other close relatives.
Herschel leaves to cherish his memories, children, James E. Hunter, Jr, Nyra, Danielle, Kelly and Kendrick. Grandchildren, Shericka, Donnisha, Darrell, Jeffery Jr., Iesha, Antonio, Semaj, Daiylan, Khaiye, Stephen III, and Kendall. Siblings, James, Brenda, Vivian, Carrie, Willene, and Calvin. 27 great-grandkids and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A visitation will be held on December 13, 2025, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, located at 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, Indiana, in the Memorial Chapel.
A Celebration of Life will follow at the same location starting at 12:00 pm.
