

Homer dedicated his life to Community Service and received many accolades and awards for his lifelong dedication of volunteering, serving and educating the minority community of their political and voting rights in a system that he fully understood and experienced himself personally where minorities were treated unfairly.
Homer passed away December 17, 2025, at the age of 89. Those he leaves behind to cherish his memory includes his beloved wife of 49 years, Beverly C. Smith, Edward D. Smith (son), Jeffrey Smith (Monica)son, granddaughters Chelsey, Nicole and Renee Smith, Bonita Smith Wood (sister), Linnie Greathouse (sister), grandchildren Dewayne E. Smith, Shaniyah Wilkes, and a host of extended family members and friends.
Homer is preceded in death by daughter Alisha L. Smith, brothers Lamar Peterson, William Peterson, Horace Peterson, Gregory Peterson and James L. Smith.
Homer was a long-time member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church where he was a past member of the New Bethel Kingsmen chorus.
Homer attended The Indianapolis Public School system, Indianapolis School of Business and is a veteran of the U.S. Army serving overseas in England with the Army Engineers. Homer also enjoyed boxing and was the lightweight champion for 2 yrs in the Air Force in Europe and England before retiring from boxing at the age of 30.
Homer retired from Union Carbide Corp. as a Marketing Specialist. He also worked 10 yrs with Securitas Security Services USA where he received recognition and awards for his service and commitment there. Homer also worked as a licensed insurance agent.
Homer became very involved and made his lifelong mission of commitment to volunteer and serve wherever he was needed in organizations such as The Greater Indianapolis Chapter of the NAACP where he was lifetime member. Homer served as the President of the Indianapolis Branch NAACP after the late Dr. A.D. Pickney. Together they were known as "The Dynamic Duo". Under Homer's leadership as NAACP President at that time, The Indianapolis branch received the top Branch Award in the state of Indiana. Homer continued his commitment and service to the NAACP until his health started to decline.
Homer was also involved in many voter registration drives. He helped organize and manage the voting poll location at 59th and Guion. Rd for many years. Homer was also a past member of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission and was once the chairman of the Indianapolis Conference on Black Politics.
Homer was a member and past Commander of the Indianapolis
Branch of the American Legion Post 249. He shared his
knowledge and experience wherever it was needed within the
organization.
Homer during his lifetime was a person committed to helping people. He mentored, he lectured, he volunteered. He was never beyond helping anyone in any way he could.
He will be greatly missed.
A visitation will be held at Crown Hill Funeral Home, located at 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, IN, 46208, on January 3, 2026, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.
A Celebration of Life will follow at the same venue, starting at 12:00 pm on January 3, 2026.
