Hong Yit Chin, known to many as "Mama Chin", passed away peacefully on April 11, 2020 at the age of 93 at Hooverwood Jewish Home in Indianapolis. She was born on March 8, 1927 in Canton, China. She was married to Edward Chin for 56 years.
Hong's life on earth was dedicated to her family. She raised two lovely daughters in China while her husband served in the US Army and worked in the Chinese restaurant business until he could save enough money to bring his family to the United States. In 1964, she and her then teenage daughters came to the United States to start a new life with her husband. Soon after, the family expanded when she had a son and daughter. She faced many of the challenges that come with adjusting to a new and very different culture. With her strength, courage, and love for her family she provided a loving home and raised 4 wonderful children. She lived a fulfilling life as a wife, mom, grandma (paw paw), and great grandma (bok bok).
She was a fabulous cook and it brought her much joy to cook for her family and friends. If she's not in the kitchen, you would find her outside in the yard tending to her garden and yard, and she was still mowing the lawn and trimming trees at the young age of 80. She also enjoyed watching game show network and cooking shows as well as enjoying the company of her grand doggies and giving them too many treats.
Hong is preceded in death by her husband, Edward; son, Glen; and son-in-law, Robert Young.
Hong is survived by her daughters, May Young, Nancy Leo (Henry), and Patty Chin; Grandchildren, Jennifer Tom (Chester), Jeff Young (Georgine), Kevin Leo, and Keith Leo (Cindy); and Great grandchildren, Megan and Aiden Leo, Justin and Ethan Tom, and Audrey and Ingrid Young.
An intimate grave side service will be at 11am , April 18, 2020 at Crown Hill Cemetery, Field of Valor with Monsignor Joseph Schaedel from St. Luke's Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hooverwood Jewish Home -Memory Care Unit. https://interland3.donorperfect.net/weblink/WebLink.aspx?name=E346770&id=5
