

Hugh Alan Wolf, a long-time resident of Carmel, Indiana, passed away June 24, 2025 at the age of 93. He is survived by sons Gregg (Bonnie) and Bruce (Jackie); six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His wife of 65 years, Valera, and daughter Karen Taff (Joe) preceded him in death.
Hugh was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and attended Broad Ripple High School and then Butler University (BA, MS). He began his teaching career at Wood High School and moved to administration at Howe High School. After earning his ED.D at Indiana University, he became the first Dean of Student Services at the newly merged IUPUI, then served as Dean of the School of Education for 20 years. During his tenure, he also served as the University’s faculty representative to the NAIA and NCAA. Hugh completed his career as the University’s first full-time Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, elevating them to NCAA status.
Throughout his life, Hugh maintained a fervent passion for the game of baseball as both player and fan. He was a letter winner in high school and at Butler and had a brief professional career in the Chicago Cubs organization. Hugh was inducted into the US Army after college, and while serving, was also player/coach for the regimental baseball team. After selection as the MVP of the 1947 American Legion baseball all-star game at (old) Victory Field, he received the game ball signed and presented to him by Babe Ruth.
Hugh has received numerous awards and recognitions including an Indiana Sagamore of the Wabash, the Indiana University Maynard Hine Award, and the IUPUI Excellence Award. He was deeply involved in community pursuits including the Indianapolis Rotary Club, Carmel United Methodist Church, Carmel Education Foundation and Carmel Library Board.
A visitation for Hugh will be held Monday, June 30, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Crown Hill Funeral Home, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, IN 46208, followed by a funeral service at 11:30 AM.
