

85, of Indianapolis, departed this life Saturday, September 24, 2022 at his home. Jim was born April 17, 1937 in Huntsville, Missouri to the last Dr. Dell Henry & Helen F. (Beatty) Johnston. He grew up and attended schools in north central Missouri and then earned his Bachelors of Science in Business Administration from the University of Missouri. Jim also proudly served his country in the United States Army for eight years with one tour in Vietnam. He then joined the reserves and retired as Lieutenant Colonel after eleven years.
Jim worked for many years in sales for the R.J. Reynolds Company. He was a member of St Alban's Episcopal Church, The Riviera Club, Scottish Right Cathedral and Robert E Kennington Post No 34 of the American Legion. He was a kind and generous soul who always put the needs of others before his own.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Hilja (Ehaste) Johnston; his loving son, Sven A. Johnston and dear brothers, Dell H. Johnston, Jr. and Robert B. Johnston.
Jim is survived by his devoted son, Glen Eric Johnston; dear daughter-in-law, Ana Johnston; grateful granddaughters, Ali Johnston and Ashley (Mychal) Runnels and dear great-granddaughter, Lexie Runnels.
A remembrance for Jim will be held during regular Sunday services on October 23rd at 10:30am at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church at 4601 N. Emerson Ave.
Visitation for Jim will be from 2 – 6 pm on Thursday, November 3rd at Crown Hill Funeral Home with a Memorial Service there beginning at 5:00 pm. Private inurnment in Crown Hill Cemetery on Friday, November 4th.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested in Jim’s name to St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, Gleaner’s Food Bank or to the Wheeler Mission Ministries.
