Jim was born in Charleston, West
Virginia. His father Glenn's work with
Union Carbide brought his family,
including his mother Jeanne, brother
Tom, and sister Bobbi to live in many
places throughout the U.S. and
Canada. After graduating from
Ossining High School in New York he
joined the USAF, serving in Thule,
Greenland as a radar specialist.
He graduated TriState
College in
Indiana in 1965 with a degree in
mechanical engineering. He has two
sons, James R. and Daniel G.
Pitzer, from a former marriage with
Linda (Hearn). He married Christine
(Conrad) in 1977 and had two sons
Jesse G. and Gregory J. Pitzer.
His career encompassed a broad
spectrum of engineering applications,
including aircraft landing gear,
automotive disc brakes, molding
systems, robotic guided productions
and heavy vehicle safety systems. RCA
brought him to Indianapolis where he
continued a consumer electronics
focus, having earned a patent for a
tape deck indexing mechanism while at
Motorola. His aviation experience took
him to Naval Avionics and he later
retired from Raytheon after proudly
working on missile guidence systems
and Polaris for our national defence.
Jim loved children and animals. He was
"Uncle Jim" to the neighborhood kids.
His interests included music, history
automobiles, photography, astronomy,
all things mechanical or electrical and
sharing that knowledge with everyone.
His enthusiasm inspired many others.
Jim was funny, inventive, truly a one of
a kind character. He insisted we should
"buy American before it was bye
America." We also often heard "If
you aren't measuring then you're only
guessing." His inventiveness put him on
a different plain than the rest of us, with
his reasoning often bringing a unique
perspective.
He will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife
Christine; brother Tom; sons Jim
(Elizabeth), Dan (Amy), Jesse, and
Greg; former spouse Linda; and a host
of grandchildren. He was preceded by
his parents, Glenn and Jeanne
(Denton), and sister Roberta Federico.
