

Sonny was born on February 11, 1936, in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Robert Christopher Ellis and Fannie Anne Haywood Ellis. He was the youngest of five children. He and his siblings were raised in Indianapolis and were active members of Christ Temple Apostolic Faith Assembly, founded by his grandfather Bishop G.T. Haywood, the revered writer, preacher, and founder of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World.
Sonny graduated from Crispus Attucks High School and went on to serve our country in the Air force where he served for 4 Years. When he returned home, Sonny secured employment with General Motors, where he worked as an Inspector for 38 years.
Mr. Ellis married Gretta June Bridgforth on June 11, 1960. Their lives were enriched by the birth of two sons, Romney Christopher Ellis, and Samuel Blair Ellis.
Sonny became a member of Witherspoon Presbyterian Church where he remained an active and dedicated Deacon until his health prevented his full participation.
Sonny spent his retirement years traveling to various islands and places in the United States. He loved fast cars, was an avid sports fan and jazz enthusiast.
Sonny is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Gretta and all four of his siblings: Frances Ellis, Robert Ellis, Ida Cooper, Hilda Rolle. He leaves to cherish his memory his sons Romney Ellis of Indianapolis, and Samuel Ellis of Indianapolis, his two grandchildren Robert Christopher Chaney of Hawaii, and Macaila L. Martin of Lafayette, seven great grandchildren, a host nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A Homegoing Celebration for John G.C. Ellis will be officiated by the Rev. Dr. Winterbourne Harrison-Jones at Witherspoon Presbyterian Church, 5136 Michigan Road, Indianapolis, IN on Monday, August 16, at Noon preceded by a viewing from 10:00 AM to Noon. Masks are kindly requested.
