

John was born on 11/27/32 to Herman and Lenore Lauter. He was an Eagle Boy Scout in his youth. John attended Shortridge High School where he was Senior Class President, graduating in 1950. He is known for throwing the winning touchdown pass for the 1949 City Championship.
John attended DePauw University and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1954 with a degree in Mathematics. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and was president in his senior year. He also met his future wife, Phyllis Hahn, at DePauw. They were married in 1955 and were married 69 years.
John served in the army for 2 years and was stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany. He was employed at American United Life Insurance Company for his entire career and retired as Vice President of Pensions.
John was president of the board of directors for the Indianapolis Boys Club for two terms. He also spent time as the Chairman of the Indianapolis Police Merit Board. John enjoyed camping and traveling with his family and was an avid Bridge and Euchre player. He also enjoyed tennis.
John was predeceased by son Kenneth Lauter. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, and sons Keith (Linda), Ronald (Sandy) and Douglas Lauter. He has 6 grandchildren (Kelsey, Christian, Cassandra, Shelby, Brittani and Saige) and 3 great grandchildren (Jemma, Rowan and August).
A calling for John will be held Sunday, September 22, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Meridian Street United Methodist Church, 5500 N. Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN 46208, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM.
