

94, of Indianapolis departed this life October 4, 2014 at home. He was born March 18, 1920 in Indianapolis to the late James H. and Bridget (Byrne) Hegarty. Joe was a graduate of Cathedral High School. He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II, and was permanently disabled. He worked for the United States Customs office throughout North America, the Indianapolis Police Department, and also proudly worked for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters - National Office. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Blinded Veterans Association. Joe was a proud and loving father and grandfather and rarely missed a Notre Dame football game. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Annie J. (Brown) Hegarty and four brothers and three sisters. Joe is survived by his children; Dr. James (Bronwyn) Hegarty, Joseph (Laura) Hegarty, Marie (Kevin) Keegan, John (Patty) Hegarty, Patrick (Leslie) Hegarty and Vernon (Sheila) Hegarty; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3 – 7 PM on Friday, October 10th in Feeney-Hornak Shadeland Mortuary. Morning prayers will begin at 9:15 am on Saturday, October 11th in the mortuary followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at SS. Peter & Paul Cathedral. Interment follows at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to: Scecina Memorial High School.
