June was born in Brownsburg, Indiana to Lawrence Leon Smith and Mary Frances (Adams) Smith on July 2, 1933. When she was a young girl, her mother taught her to sew and cook and she excelled at both. June began taking piano lessons at age 7 and became an excellent pianist and organist. She graduated from Brownsburg High School in 1951. June attended Jordan College of Music at Butler University where she met Jim Edison in the music class trumpet section. She transferred to Indiana University School of Music and graduated summa cum laude in 1955 with a BA in Piano Performance. Jim and June were married on June 30, 1956, at Brownsburg Christian Church. A lifelong musician, June began teaching piano lessons soon after graduating high school and continued teaching for over 60 years. In addition to free-lance gigging, she was the accompanist for the Arlington H.S. choral department, retiring in 1998 after 35 years and was the organist for Zionsville United Methodist Church for 26 years, retiring in 2017. As an extension of her successful piano teaching methods, June developed and published the Peanuts Piano Course, illustrated by Charles Schulz. In the promotion of the Peanuts Piano Course, she had the great privilege of sharing her teaching methods with piano teachers throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, and Singapore. June was a member of Psi Iota Xi philanthropic sorority, American Guild of Organists, and was a life member of the American Federation of Musicians, Local 3.
