Leslie enjoyed gardening, fishing, trucking, and upholstery. He believed in gardening to provide for his family and a plethora of others around the community. Leslie had his own business known as "Reid's Trim and Upholstery". He enjoyed teaching young adults Upholstery during the summer months. He served as a General Manager for Dohrn Transfer Company prior to beginning his legacy of Upholstery. Leslie enthusiastically volunteered in numerous organizations around Indianapolis. For many years he worked with Roberts Park Soup Ministry. In early years he assisted the Marion County Health Department with Blood Pressure Screenings. While he was still doing Upholstery, he would shut the shop down on Monday's and dedicate his time to serving the Project Homeless Ministry. This is where he coordinated a team to create quilts known as the "Ugly Quilts" at his church. The VA was near and dear to his heart. He served other veterans in the Prosthetics and Optical departments there.
Leslie married Arlene Beckem in 2007. From this marriage, Leslie inherited 2 special in-laws-Lois and Michael Beckem, sister and brother of his wife, Arlene Reid, whom she was caring for and loved. In 2013, due to his diabetes, Leslie suffered renal complications. He received dialysis 3 times a week where he befriended VA staff, doctors, fellow soldiers and many others. He would bring corned beef sandwiches and cheesecake to the dialysis technicians. Leslie became a double amputee in 2014, yet he never let his disabilities stop him from loving and giving to others. He continued maintaining his garden and serving in the soup program at his church along with hosting the Wednesday Morning Bible Study.
Leslie loved people and enjoyed entertaining. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a special love for all of his nieces and nephews. Even though he was an avid Pacers fan, every year he hosted a "Super Bowl" Party for family and friends. He hosted large dinner-parties on holidays and was always looking for a reason to entertain and serve others. His most notable event was the Annual Passover Dinner.
Leslie was preceded in death by his parents, Agnew and Estell Reid; four sisters Norma Young, Joyce Reid, Loretta Brunt and Carolyn Hill; a brother, Ronald Reid; two Nephews-Anthony and Bryon McCraklin; a niece-Deborah Farris; and his Special sister-in-law, Lois Beckem.
He leaves to cherish his memories: His wife, Arlene Reid of 12 years; two daughters, Nicole Reid of Indianapolis, Indiana; and Yvette Reid of Las Vegas, Nevada; two sons, Benjamin Reid of Indianapolis, Indiana; and Leslie Reid Jr. of Phoenix, Arizona; three sisters, Anita (Jerome) Hillman; Rowena (Marvin) Bacon; and Ruth Reid; two brothers, Kenneth (Nell) Reid and Phillip Reid, a sister-in-law, Ada Reid, all of Indianapolis, Indiana; grandchildren, Leslie Mann, Emerald Perkins, and Chavo Scott; and six great grandchildren, all of Indianapolis, Indiana; Church Family, Grace Communion of Indianapolis (Former Pastor David and Jonnie Perry; Present Pastor Albert and Marilyn Talison); friend Doris York of Plymouth, Minnesota: Special Friends and Mentors, Mr. and Mrs. Washington; His nurse's assistant, Christopher Jefferson-who not only cared for him, but was his friend; and a host of family, friends, nieces and nephews.
Leslie had a special love for his brother, Kenneth. He stated, "That he was not just his older brother, but his friend". Kenneth helped care for and visited Leslie often during his last days on earth. Toward the end of Leslie's life the VA Doctors referred to him as "A Man with a Strong Heart" due to his will to live being so great. As in the way he lived his life, it was the same during his death-he never gave up. He will be greatly missed.
