Born on November 17, 1930, in Glasgow, Kentucky, the youngest child of Wendell and Lillie May Lewis Scrivener, Lillie Eugenia Jones lived a life rich with love, service, and devotion. She departed this life on December 27, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, faith, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.
Lillie grew up in Glasgow, where her faith was nurtured at Oak Grove Baptist Church. At the age of 17, she moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, following in the footsteps of her older sisters. In Indianapolis, she continued her spiritual growth at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.
On November 25, 1951, Lillie married John Samuel Rias Jones. Together, they built a life centered around family and hard work. Lillie initially worked alongside her sister Mattie at Circle Tavern Restaurant, before dedicating herself to raising her children and supporting her husband in small business ventures. Later in life, she worked as a storage clerk at the VA hospital, from which she retired.
In her retirement, Lillie opened a daycare business that became a second family to many. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her own children and grandchildren to countless others who came under her care. Many of these children continued to visit and cherish her guidance long after they grew up.
Above all, Lillie treasured her family. She was a devoted mother to four children: Philip, Jeffery, Kim, and Gregory (Jacquelyn), a stepmother to Patricia Marshall and John Samuel Jones Jr. (preceded in death), a loving grandmother to ten grandchildren: David (Shante), Daniel, Lindsey, Jalil, Trey, Nila, Hadiya, Bilal, Ismail, and Shawn (Trudy), and a great-grandmother to many.. Her home was a place of warmth and refuge, where she often cared for and hosted relatives during their times of need.
Lillie was preceded in death by her beloved parents and was the cherished sister of Mable Wells, Mattie Appleton, Georgia Edmonds, Ella Lockhart, Thomas Scrivener, Robert Scrivener, and Wendall Lewis Scrivener. Her siblings held a special place in her heart, and she maintained close bonds with them throughout her life.
Known for her generous heart and boundless compassion, Lillie was a pillar of strength and grace to all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for her enduring faith, selfless love, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.
A visitation for Lillie will be held Saturday, January 18, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 3801 Forest Manor Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46226, followed by a celebration of life at 12:00 PM.
