Maggie’s was also preceded in death by her first born, a daughter, Claudia May Knox who died as an infant of pneumonia.
Maggie professed a hope in Christ at an early age and attended churches in the Clarksdale area. The family made their living as sharecroppers in the Jim Crow Era South. Education was difficult to obtain for girls during those times, but Maggie had a dream of getting an education.
In the early 1940’s, the family moved to Hughes, Arkansas. While in Hughes, Maggie was united in holy matrimony to Earl Shelton in 1948.
In 1950, Maggie moved with the help of her younger brother, Clarence Knox, Sr., to Indianapolis. Maggie was able to get a job at the RCA Corporation where she retired after 25 years of service. While in Indianapolis, she attended Zion Tabernacle Apostolic Church and taught Sunday School for many years.
Finally, she realized her dream by getting an education and earned a G.E.D., in 1977. Maggie had many talents and hobbies that she generously shared with family and friends which included cooking, sewing, gardening and fishing.
As Maggie’s health begin to decline, she was unable to attend church or move about freely. Maggie departed this life on February 22, 2024, at the age of 97 years, 6 months and 10 days.
Maggie leaves to cherish her memories her sons: James (Carolyn) Palmer, Tommy (Anita) Palmer, Eric (Halima) Shelton and Mark Shelton, a daughter: Diane Shelton, Sister: Mildred Walker, Niece: Willie M. Curtiss, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one great-great grandson and a host of relatives and friends.
