She was born on the 12th of August, 1923, in Oakland City, Indiana, to Harry and Edna (Sturm) Apostle. She graduated from East Chicago Roosevelt High School and earned her Bachelor's degree with a double major in Chemistry and Foods and Nutrition from Purdue University.
Marie's first teaching experience was at the day adult school in Columbus, Indiana. Her last, prior to her retirement, was as a substitute teacher at Beech Grove High School in Beech Grove, Indiana. She dearly loved the students and was warmly greeted by one or more of them nearly everywhere she went in the Indianapolis area.
Marie was a wonderful role model. She was kind, loving, gentle and thoughtful. She was our sister, mother, grandmother and friend, and we miss her deeply.
Marie was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Dr. Harold W. Mammen. She is survived by her children, William Mammen and his wife Pamela, of Beech Grove, Indiana, Charles Mammen and his wife Sally, of Beverly, Massachusetts, daughter Dorothy Mammen and her partner Fred Dunnington, of Middlebury, Vermont, and daughter Elizabeth (Betty) Thomas and her husband Douglas, of Houston, Texas; by her grandchildren, Jeffrey Mammen and his wife Kris, Jennifer Centrone and her husband Jeff, Joy Hampton, Jeremy Mammen, Jason Mammen, Eric Mammen, Sage Trombulak, Ian Trombulak, and James Thomas; and by her great-grandchildren, Claire Mammen, Derek Centrone and Cole Hampton. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Neidig, sisters-in-law Lois Mammen and Ileen Yoder, cousin Hanna Mammen, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
The family wishes to thank the many organizations that supported Marie during the last twelve years of her life since she moved to Middlebury, Vermont: Russ Sholes Senior Center, Champlain Valley Agency on Aging Meals on Wheels, Addison County Home Health and Hospice, and Elderly Services Project Independence. We are especially grateful to Jeannette Brassard, who lovingly cared for Marie in her home for the past five years, and to the staff at Project Independence for the love and respect with which they cared for Marie.
