Though she made her home in Indianapolis for more than seven decades, Mary’s heart never left the hills of Kentucky. Born on August 22, 1926, in Hazard, KY, to Virgie and Benton Cornett, she carried her Appalachian roots with affection, always considering Kentucky her true home.
Mary found joy in gardening, cooking, and spending time with loved ones. Her faith was central to her life, and she was a devoted member of Bible Study Chapel from its founding in 1969.
She is survived by her sister, Martha Mahurin; four granddaughters—Mary, Kebra, Ashley, and Tory; ten great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Virgie and Benton Cornett; her first husband, Astor Campbell, and second husband, Pearl Pennington; her sisters Irene, Myrtle, Sis, Ruth, and Dory; her brother, Floyd; and her beloved children, Tim Campbell and Carolyn Willing.
A visitation will be held on Monday, November 10, 2025, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at Feeney-Hornak Shadeland Mortuary, 1307 North Shadeland Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46219. Burial will follow at Sutherland Park Cemetery, 4201 Millersville Road, Indianapolis, IN 46205.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate caregivers at Bloom at Kessler Assisted Living and Memory Care Facility and Accent Care Hospice, and to Mary’s neighbor, Julie Bailey, for her support and friendship.
