Mary L. Smith

Mary Lillian Smith, 88 of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on Friday, April 8, 2022. Mary was born January 15, 1934, the first born to her parents Clarence and Mabel Lyle. She spent her early years in and around Montgomery County (City of Clarksville) Tennessee, where she attended Burt High School.

In 1950, Mary married Ben Long and from this union a daughter, Phyllis (Long) Clark was born.

In March 1954 she relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana. During this period, Mary held various domestic jobs.

Mary subsequentially married Verne Kelly Smith and maintained this union for 47 years before his death on November 16 2017. She operated a child care service from her home until her health began to deteriorate. Mary attended Cathedral of Praise Christian Church in Indianapolis where she was active in Sunday school, Sunday Service and various functions until her health failed. Her hobbies included spending and enjoying time with her family.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Ida Louise Hill and Clarence Edward Lyle, and grandson Robert Walter Tibbs III.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Clark; son in law Andre’ Clark; grandson Clarence Leon Gilbert; siblings Dorothy Ewing, Birdia Haynes, Robert H L Lyle, Nazaree Rose, Martha Lyle, Alyce Lyle, Earlene (Anthony) Collier, Dallas (Carol) Lyle, and Joyce (Garry) Williams. She also leaved behind a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends who cherish her memory and will miss her.

Visitation will be 10:00-12:00, Saturday April 30, 2022 at Crown Hill Funeral Home

Mary L. Smith ‘s life will be celebrated in a 12:00pm service at Crown Hill Cemetery and Funeral Home on April 30, 2022. Mary will be laid to rest on the grounds of Crown Hill Cemetery that same day.
