

With deep gratitude and faith, we honor the life of Maxine Burton Young, a beloved daughter of God, a devoted mother, cherished sister, aunt, cousin, sister-in-law, and a guiding light in the lives of many. Her journey on this earth ended on Sunday, May 25, 2025, as she answered the divine call to dwell in the eternal peace and joy that Jesus has prepared for her.
Maxine’s life was a testament to her unwavering faith and her dedication to serving others. She was an inspiring educator at Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), whose nurturing spirit touched countless students’ hearts. Her academic pursuits led her to earn a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Rust College and a Master’s in Education from Butler University, evidence of her commitment to growth, learning, and sharing wisdom.
Her spirit was rooted in her Christian faith and was an active member of Holy Angels Catholic Church until she moved to Aubrey, Texas, in 2023.
Maxine’s life reflected resilience, strength, and a bold spirit that uplifted everyone around her. She found joy in being a devoted sister, a loving mother, and being an educator. Her legacy lives on through her acts of compassion, her unwavering faith, and her dedication to empowering others.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ezell Young, her dear parents, Francis Adrana Richmond Burton and Odell Burton Sr., and her siblings, Eldridge Burton, Eleanor Matthews, and Odell Burton.
Maxine leaves behind her beloved daughter, Lawanda Kaye Young-Green, her sister Wanda Jean Burton, sisters-in-laws Brenda Appleton (Ron Appleton), Doris Shaw (Dan Shaw), Joyce Jones-Ingram (Dennis Ingram) and Voycell Neal (Steven Neal); along with many treasured relatives, nieces, nephews, friends and cousins who carry her memory in their hearts.
A visitation for Maxine will be held Friday, June 6, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 740 W. 28th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46208, followed by a funeral mass at 12:00 PM.
