Mr. Raymond Carter

Raymond Carter, 75 transitioned his soul peacefully on November 23, 2016. Raymond, affectionately known as “Poppa” was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on March 6, 1941 to the union of Roy David Carter and Margaret Carter, both whom preceded him in death. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Mackie Carson-Carter and one son Alan Carson.

Raymond attended IPS John Hope School 26 and graduated from Arsenal Tech High School, after which he attended Ball State University. Raymond worked in Food Service Management at Community Hospital, William H Block & Co., retiring in 2005 from Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital (formerly known as Wishard Memorial Hospital).

Raymond enjoyed sports which led him to play and coach basketball and baseball for community teams. He also had a knack for cooking and loved to use his culinary skills to bring people together and feed the masses.

Raymond professed his life to Christ at an early age, becoming a devoted MAN OF GOD and dedicated faithful servant at the St. John’s African Methodist Episcopal Church, serving in ministries of the Sons of Allen, Trustee, Lay Organization, Indiana Lay Male Chorus, Men’s Bible Study, Head Cook for the Church, Coordinator of the Volunteer Staff and Coordinator of Custodial Services. Raymond was always available to do any task big or small.

Raymond leaves to cherish his memory 3 sisters; Juanita Ewing, Beverly Riggins (Donald) and Cheryl Ligon, all of Indianapolis, IN. 11 children; Tammy Carter, Janet Carson, Carolyn Carson, Kathi Carson-Nix and Michele Wales all of Indianapolis, IN and Linda Carson of Chicago IL; Raymond Duane Carter, Randy Wilcox (Deborah), Eric Wilcox (Virgie), Michael Wales (Wanda) all of Indianapolis, IN AND Jim Carson (Tahndrea) of Chicago, IL; beloved niece and nephew Nicole Sanders and Anthony Sanders (Tonya) both of Indianapolis; 22 grandchildren, 25 great- grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephew, cousins, extended family and church family.
