Mrs. Bettye Lou Porter

Bettye Lou Porter was born on April 12, 1935 in McKenzie, Tennessee to Bailey and Susie "Nell" Gilbert. Throughout her life she maintained a sweet and classy demeanor that won the trust and hearts of many, who even now are being changed by her nurturing love and scholarship. Her signature gift of joy, shown through her contagious smile, laughter, and gentle spirit, will never be forgotten. After graduating from Webb High School she migrated North from Tennessee to Indianapolis, Indiana. Bettye married her Sweetheart, George Howard Porter on April 19, 1955. A few years later, Bettye and George welcomed their only child, Jeffery Andre Porter. After marriage and the birth of her son, she went on to further her education by earning a Bachelor's degree in nursing from I.U. School of Nursing. Bettye held numerous positions within the nursing field, but soon found a passion in Psychiatry where she excelled to the position of Director of Nursing at the V.A. Hospital in Indianapolis. After many years of professional excellence and service, Bettye retired in 1996. Bettye served as a dedicated member to the Tennessee Women's Club and her high school's Web Alumni chapter. Married for 60 years, possessing a true servant’s heart, Bettye faithfully cared for her family. A woman of faith and the heart of the Porter family, Bettye shaped their lives by modeling a faithful example of strength, love, dedication and success. With a real zest for life, Mrs. Porter loved traveling, shopping, interior decorating and especially spending time with her Grandchildren and family. Bettye is preceded in death by her husband, George Howard Porter, parents Bailey and Susie Gilbert and brothers; JB, David, Willie and Bailey Jr. She is survived by her son, Jeffery Porter. Grandchildren Shannon Willis, Marii Costin, D'Andre Porter, Diamond Porter, seven great grandchildren. Sisters; Ella Mae Wilson(Charles), Maleader Anne Jointer(Willie), Sarah Anne Posey (David), Della Mitchum (Gordon), Thelma Williams (Thomas); one brother, Henry Lee Gilbert (Barbara) and host of nieces and nephews.
