Nola J. Stookey, a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, passed away on September 14, 2024, in her home in Indianapolis.
Nola was born January 1, 1938, in Syracuse, Indiana, to Ray F. and Bertha V. (Replogle) Meek. The daughter of an accountant and a librarian, she grew up in Syracuse and married Dr. George K. Stookey. Nola and George moved to Bloomington, Indiana, where Nola worked to help support their young family as George pursued his studies, and the pair eventually moved to Brownsburg, Indiana, and then to Indianapolis, before settling in Noblesville, where Nola dedicated herself to motherhood. She loved helping her children excel in 4-H projects ranging from cooking and gardening to showing horses and cows, and as an animal lover, Nola helped care for various stray dogs that her children brought home. Nola was also an avid reader and talented artist, hobbies that she dedicated more time to after raising her children. She joined a China painting club with a group of friends, painting beautiful collections that have become treasured family heirlooms. Nola also enjoyed travel; George’s career brought them to explore parts of Asia and Europe, and she loved recounting their adventures abroad. Nola had a knack for storytelling, she found humor in everything, and she made those around her feel important and understood. In her later years, she especially cherished visits from her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Family meant everything to her. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Nola was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 67 years, Dr. George K. Stookey, who passed away in January 2022. She leaves behind her children, Lynda Howard, Lisa (Brian) Hoover, Laura (David) Bone, and Kenneth (Michele) Stookey; her grandchildren Evan (Lauren) Howard, Emily (Justin) Huffman, Elliot Howard, Alison (Bart) Collins, Erika (Jonathan) Velasco, Nathan (Charina) Hoover, Rachel (Michael) Perez, Landon Bone, Isabella Stookey, and Madeline Stookey; and ten great-grandchildren.
A visitation for Nola will be held Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at the Crown Hill Gothic Chapel, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, Indiana 46208, followed by a funeral service at 1:30 PM. Nola will be laid to rest at Crown Hill Cemetery.
