Born in Chicago, Illinois, Rick spent his formative years moving between Iowa, Indiana, and California, but Indianapolis was always where he felt most at home.
After earning a bachelor’s degree from California State University Long Beach, and his law degree from Southwestern Law School, Rick went on to a distinguished legal career in California, practicing for nearly forty years. As in-house counsel at Farmers Insurance, Rick’s trial practice encompassed complex torts and intellectual property disputes, gaining him recognition for his meticulous approach and unwavering dedication to justice. His presence in the courtroom was uniquely memorable, often winning his cases by captivating juries with a creative, theatrical style of arguing. He ultimately served as the managing partner of Farmers’ San Jose office. Beyond his practice, Rick extended his legal expertise to the community as a judge pro tempore in the Superior Court of Santa Clara County and as a beloved professor at Lincoln Law School, where he took pride in mentoring the next generation of legal professionals.
Rick’s love for the law was surpassed only by his devotion to his two children, Beth and Bryce. Known to many as “Coach Rick,” he was an ever-present figure in his kids’ many hobbies, from cheering them on at their first soccer games and swim meets, to leading the Leland High School varsity hockey and mock trial programs. Rick was a passionate coach, announcer, and supporter, bringing his energetic spirit to the sidelines and inspiring young athletes to strive for excellence.
A man of deep integrity and faith, Rick also dedicated himself to his church and numerous charitable causes, always seeking to give back to his community. Following his retirement, he returned to Noblesville, Indiana, where he continued to teach law and immerse himself in his lifelong passion for racing, attending countless events at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Rick’s courage, kindness, and wisdom left a lasting impact on those who knew him. He leaves behind his children, Beth and Bryce, along with a legacy that spans the legal profession and extends to the many young athletes and lawyers he mentored. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those who were fortunate enough to call him “Coach Rick”.
