Avis de décès de Richard Alan Shadiow
AUX SOINS DE

Feeney-Hornak Keystone Mortuary

Richard Alan Shadiow, 70, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2025, after an 8-year battle with cancer that he fought with joy, humility and steadfastness. Born on July 13, 1954, in Indianapolis, Rick was a devout Christian, a loving husband, and a dedicated father and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Carla Jean (Agnew) Shadiow, their three sons and their wives, Matt and Stephanie Walkup, Brian and Michelle Shadiow, and Scott and Kaitlyn Shadiow, as well as five cherished grandchildren: Tyler Walkup (22), Nicolas Walkup (14), Alaena Shadiow (13), Bowen Shadiow (8), and Sloane Shadiow (6). He is also survived by his mother Elaine Shadiow, his siblings and their spouses, Barbara Shadiow and Ed Imatani, Bruce and Janet Shadiow, David and Celeste Shadiow, Debbie and Ed Rudiger, his brother-in-law Douglas Agnew, and many loved nieces and nephews.

Rick grew up in Indianapolis, born to the late Dwain LeRoy Shadiow and Elaine Audrey (Peterson) Shadiow. He was the second oldest of five children, attending Howe High School before going to Butler University where he played football, was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Math in 1976. He then continued his studies, earning a Master’s degree in Education at IUPUI. It was at his first Math teaching job at Eastwood Middle School where he met Carla, the love of his life. In less than a year they married on March 1, 1980, and they built a life of happiness together founded on faith, love and family.

Rick was the embodiment of selflessness, putting the happiness of his family above all else. He lived with a deep commitment to his faith, family, and work. His love for Carla was evident in their 45 years of marriage, and together they have been active members of Northside Baptist Church, where for many years they served in the youth ministry, touching countless lives with their compassion and dedication, and where he continued to serve in various ways until his passing.

As a lifelong educator, Rick was passionate about teaching and guiding young minds. He spent his career as a math teacher, primarily at North Central High School and later at Cathedral High School, before retiring in 2024. Rick had a passion for many sports from a young age, a love he shared with his family and friends. His love for baseball, football and golf extended into his teaching career, where he dedicated many years to coaching baseball, football, and golf at North Central, as well as golf at Cathedral. His knowledge of the games and his passion for mentoring young athletes left a lasting impact on countless students and players.

Rick had a quiet, calm nature, but his words carried conviction, were positive, and what he said mattered. Even while battling cancer, Rick never lost his positive attitude and joyful approach to life. He faced every day with unwavering strength, and his wit, wisdom, and humor remained with him until the very end.

Rick’s family was the cornerstone of his life, and his love for them was immeasurable. His life was defined by his Christ-like service to others, and he leaves a lasting legacy of love, faith, and integrity. A celebration of Rick’s life will be held on Saturday, February 15, at 11:30 a.m. at Northside Baptist Church. Rather than flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Jimmy V Foundation, The First Tee, or Northside Baptist Church Covenant Food Pantry—three organizations that were meaningful to Rick and Carla.
