From the time he was old enough to play catch with his father, Scott developed a love and competitive sprit for athletics and exhibited his talents in 3 sports at Arlington High School. He was recognized for his achievements in football and baseball as an Indiana All State athlete. In 1968, he was voted Indianapolis’ number one prep star and winner of the City Athlete of the Year award.
Scott also served on the student council and was a member of the National Honors Society. He further developed his academic and athletic skill at Indiana University, Bloomington, where he played football and received the Academic Big 10 award his sophomore year.
After graduation, Scott began a career in marketing and design with McGill-Ross advertising agency. He then became one of Outside Source’s early business partners. Most recently, he founded and co-owned Daugherty Tegarden & Partners LLC, a prosperous Indianapolis marketing and design firm. He’s shared a successful business partnership with Don Daugherty for over 30 years.
Scott was a passionate musician and played piano, saxophone, clarinet, and harmonica. His passion likely influenced his children who love music and are all musicians, dancers and singers. He played beautiful music and reveled in an opportunity to serenade others. Similarly, he loved to entertain friends. He was a charming host, distinctive cook, eloquent poet, and quick-witted jokester. Many of Mr. T’s favorite hours were spent coaching and mentoring the youth in CYO, Tabernacle and AAU Basketball.
Scott regularly said, “Today is going to be the best day!” He lived his life with this philosophy including the most difficult days of his battle with cancer. He had a huge heart with which he made anyone feel welcome. Scott found special solitude and peace on the banks of the river with a fly rod in his hand.
Most significantly, Scott courted his wife, Suzie, throughout their entire marriage. Through his devotion to his children, he instilled in them a sense and desire towards pride and independence. Scott experienced success on the gridiron, on the golf course, in academics and in business. But no success compared to the wealth he developed through the love and respect he created with his wife, children, extended family and circle of friends. Scott will be missed and welcomed in heaven.
