My dad was the best. As a dad, he was ahead of his time. He made most of the meals, packed lunches, helped with homework, he came to all of my tennis matches straight from work wearing his suit and tie. 
My dad was so smart. He taught me so much about how things work. Why is the sky blue?  Why is the grass green? He would enter into lengthy science based explanations. My sister would say, “Don’t ask Daddy if you don’t really want to know the answer!” 
I know he wanted me to become a pharmacist. I also know that he was proud of the path I chose instead. 
My dad was very patient. He and I worked through lots of tears (mine) over math homework (my struggle with math is why I didn’t decide to become a pharmacist). 
He was a really good cook. I loved his “Spiral noodle dinner” and “Thanksgiving Lasagna” but my favorite was “Breakfast for Supper!” 
He loved chocolate. (so do I!) 
He loved my mom and would do anything for her. Her sorority sisters set them up, and they sure knew what they were doing! I’m not sure what the lingo was back in the late 1950’s but I’d say he was a catch. My mom always said that my dad was ‘born to be a dad’. He was a natural. 
Weekend bike rides. Cracking up at Peanuts comic strips together. Going to McDonald’s for hotcakes on Saturdays – he’d cut up my pancakes while I put cream and sugar in his coffee. Trips to Central Hardware. Going to get Roslyn doughnuts or cookies before church. Time spent together. These are the things I’ll always remember about my dad. 
When I went away to IU for college, I was homesick a lot my Freshman year, even though it was around an hour away, it felt really far to me. The other day when I was looking through a box of photos, I found this note that I had kept, written in his impossible to read handwriting. It said: “Hi Suzy! Sorry you’re feeling blue but just work on one day at a time like I’m trying to do and pretty soon it will be spring! Love, Daddy”.

Part 2
He was quick to lend a helping hand.  Over the years he helped Scott build our first deck (well Bill did the measuring and building and Scott was more of an assistant), was a “go to” if something in the house needed a repair, would show up with Andrea to work on landscaping, till the garden beds, and plant bushes and flowers.  
He was so excited to become a grandfather.  Our children were blessed to have him as their grandpa.  He loved holding and cuddling them as babies. As they grew he introduced them to some of the things he loved (train sets, lego building, puzzles, and flying kites to name a few).  He and Andrea would spend hours with them at the zoo or the children’s museum giving them opportunities to explore and learn.  He was one of the most patient people I’ve ever known.  
You could tell he was proud of his children and grandchildren.  He was interested in everything they did and offered guidance, encouragement, and advice over the years. He was the perfect role model of a husband, father, and grandfather.
This is a hard week for our family.  We are not ready to say goodbye to Bill’s physical presence in our lives. But he lives on—in our memories, and more importantly, in the people he loved.
I see Bill every day in Scott’s care and support for me and our family and in his endless patience. In the time Cindy faithfully spent with both Bill and Andrea caring and supporting them. In Suzy’s love and compassion for all. I see him in Alex’s interest in astronomy and Legos, in Gracie’s empathy for people, animals, and the environment. In Will’s steadfast devotion and support to his mom. In Vivienne’s interest for robotics and how things work. And in Roy’s enthusiasm and joy when he’s with family.
Bill’s legacy is not just in what he did, but in who he was—and in the love and care he gave so freely.

Part 1
I first met Bill in 1984 in my high school chemistry class.  This was before Scott and I had started dating.  Bill volunteered to host a presentation in our class.  By this point in the year, many of the students, myself included, had already written off chemistry as a possible career path for the future.  I don’t really remember much about chemistry class at all. To be honest, I don’t remember exactly what experiment Bill conducted.  He added some chemicals to a beaker.  At one point, out of the entire class, he asked me to come up and stir the contents in the beaker.  I think the chemicals reacted and turned into some crazy color and he earned some “oohs and aahs”, which was quite an accomplishment from a group of high school students.  What I remember most about that class, was how kind and patient Bill seemed and thinking Scott, who I didn’t know well at the time, was lucky to have him as a dad. 
A few weeks later, Scott asked me to prom.  As with most prom couples, we visited each other’s homes for the obligatory prom photos.  I felt a bit nervous to meet his family.  But, remembering how kind Bill seemed during chemistry class, put my nerves at ease a bit.  And, as any of you that knew Bill would guess, he was warm and welcoming.
As Scott and I continued dating, we spent a lot of time with his family.  As Suzy points out, he was very progressive in his approach to family life.  He worked full time and also supported Andrea and the kids by helping with dinners, cleaning, grocery shopping, and gardening.  I also remember how he faithfully spent time with his own mother until her passing. He enjoyed supporting his family in all things.
Bill seemed happiest when surrounded by family. Whether it was a holiday meal, a beach vacation, or a simple evening watching TV or playing Trivial Pursuit, Uno, or Pictionary—he was in his element.

May the family have peace as he is in good hands now🙏🙏 I will miss him lots he was always positive and friendly. Will miss fixing his meals!

My thoughts and prayers to all of Bill's family at this difficult time. I feel fortunate to have worked for Bill at Eli Lilly for several years. He made this world a better place with his presence. I am sorry to hear of Bill's passing. I worked for Bill at Lilly back in the late 1990's. He was such a kind, wise, caring man. He gave me advice once about my preteen son that liked to talk to me alot. Bill advised me to enjoy it while I could because there may come the day that he won't want to talk /share with me.  Good advice and I learned to be patient.
